After another relaxing breakfast we pack up the cars and head towards home. The roads between Coonawarra and Melbourne are superb. The roads are not as tortuous with very little traffic except the occasional Police car, so you need to be wary.
We are in the heart of what is called “The Western District” This area is where the landed gentry come from. Many of the large land holdings go back many generations and there are some magnificent country homes dotted around. One of our recent Prime Ministers was from this neck of the woods. The country is very picturesque and the driving is sublime.
Tonight we stay overnight at The Royal Mail Hotel almost in the middle of nowhere. It was once a vital link in the famous Cobb & Co. Royal Mail service in the 1850’s. Extensive renovations have turned it into a boutique hotel offering exceptional dining. Contemporary accommodation is designed to capture the stunning beauty of the Southern Grampians, the hotel features sweeping views from most rooms.
Rumour has it that the hotel was purchased by a leading Melbourne barrister who was born and grew up in the area. He has invested a small fortune into the local community, owning a stately property that he frequently returns to. He has established the Royal Mail Hotel as a property to be savoured by those used to the finer things in life.
The restaurant in Dunkeld is famous for both its food and extensive wine list. It regularly wins awards for being the best restaurant in country Victoria.
